Independent projects & experiments

Projects and
explorations.

I want to make it easier for people to act on what they have in mind.

I build with AI agents, and we spend a lot of time thinking about how to approach that. These projects grew out of questions in my work and family, and the ideas we developed together.Thinking through the experience

Selected work

Built through questions and use.
Construction · CollaborationIn use

Carbide List

A shared place for builders, crews, and homeowners to see the work from where they stand. Photos, requests, and updates stay together, with English and Spanish helping everyone take part.

Games · LearningLive

Tiny Rivals

A math world growing out of the games my kids already enjoy. Difficult questions can become bosses to face, creatures become theirs to keep, and a garden gives them room to discover what the mathematics does.

Movement · Native appsIn development

TreadCal

I wanted a more accurate calorie estimate for incline walking. TreadCal uses the phone’s sensors to measure the treadmill’s slope, so the calculation starts with the actual incline behind the setting on the console.

Reading · VoicePrototype

Threadmark

A reading prototype for the thought an article gives you. Pause to ask a question, follow it for a while, and return to the passage, with the author’s words still there to examine.

Connection · RealtimeLive platform

Carbide Spaces

A place for a conversation and the work it gathers around. Calls, notes, and shared activities stay close, so people can follow an idea from talking about it to working on it together.

Language · Critical readingArchived experiment

The Generative Mind

An exploration of what language does to our thinking. The tools examine how a passage opens or narrows an idea, and leave their own interpretation available for the reader to question.

Thinking through the experience

At Carbide Studios, I think about technology through what happens to the people and work around it. Making an experience simple can take a lot of thought about what someone is trying to do, and what it feels like from where they are.

A reason to come back

My kids already liked catching creatures and building a home. We began there, and explored how a question they found difficult could become a boss they wanted to face. Their interest helped us think about the way back into the mathematics.

Inside Tiny Rivals

Information people can use

A homeowner, a crew, and a builder need to understand the same work from different positions. With Carbide List, we thought about how photos, language, and a shared record could make that easier for everyone involved.

About Carbide List

Learning from the work

We use agents to work on problems, review, and debug. I also want us to learn from that work. A lesson can sound useful when we write it down; evaluations help us ask whether it changes how we approach the next problem.

Further explorations

Ongoing & archived
Personal geneticsClosed

Genetic Playbook

A closed exploration of how to make a raw DNA file understandable without sending it away for analysis. Plain language offered a way in, with the findings and references available to examine.

Food · DiscoveryPrototype

DeelishDish

A restaurant discovery prototype for the moment you are choosing what to eat. It brings together what diners say about particular dishes, with their reviews close enough to help you decide.

Personal systemsOngoing

Beany / Elliott OS

An effort to make an AI collaborator useful across conversations and days. We think about what is worth remembering, what should remain open to change, and how the next conversation can begin with less explanation.

From the notebook

Smaller experiments & earlier work
Wave

An earlier reading interface with conversations attached to individual paragraphs.

RSVP Reader

A webpage and Chrome extension for exploring faster reading.

The Night Shift

An illustrated science book prototype for children about sleep. The archive records a story draft and visual development.

Agent Development Lab

Can what we learn from one problem help us with the next? Experiments in how agents work together, examine their work, and test the guidance they might carry forward. Read about the experiments.

Narrative portfolio

An earlier portfolio built around a scrolling story, connecting animation to the idea being presented.

Voice analysis

An audio experiment combining transcription with tone signals.
